If you’ve been following my blog for a little bit, you probably know by this point that I always carefully scan ingredient lists. If the ingredient list does not match up with the homemade version of it, then I don’t buy it. Which brings me to the store-bought taco seasoning. I’m not going to call out any brands on here, but sugar, natural flavors, silicon dioxide, soy derivatives, and potato starch have no place in a taco seasoning mix. Now, you could buy a packet of organic taco seasoning, but that’s just plain expensive. So, it’s time to learn how to make your own homemade taco seasoning mix :). Making your own homemade taco seasoning mix at home takes less than 10 minutes from start to finish, and it will ONLY consist of spices. The recipe below makes enough to season 1 to 1.5 pounds of ground meat (or meat alternative). This homemade taco seasoning mix is very flavorful, and it’s something you can feel confident about because you assembled it from scratch!

How do you make taco seasoning from scratch?

To make taco seasoning, all you have to do is mix together chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, oregano, crushed red pepper flakes, garlic powder, and onion powder.

What can you substitute for cumin in taco seasoning?

Probably the best substitute would be ground coriander since cumin and coriander are botanical cousins. Both spices give dishes a lemony and earthy flavor, with ground coriander being milder in heat. If using ground coriander in place of ground cumin, substitute half of what the recipe calls for. For more ground cumin substitution options, click here. Your other option is to just leave the ground cumin out entirely.
